Reflections on Episode 1: SHEroism Starts at Home

Frankly, I was overwhelmed. We were all so nervous. The doubt was almost crippling. Dramatic, I know. But really, did we have anything new or different to say? Was our story unique? Did that even matter? The nervousness eventually faded…

The minute we stopped recording the first episode of Neighbourhood SHEro, I felt a rush of emotions - pride, inspiration, relief and most of all gratitude. Sitting around the kitchen table with the two most important women in my life hit me harder than anticipated. This conversation didn’t seem very different than our usual reminiscing on old memories but, it really was.

Perhaps it was the context. Sharing memories in the context of the impact we had on each other’s lives, how we felt in those moments, how those moments resonated and continue to resonate with us, solidified the sheer power of grassroots SHEroism. It was powerful to hear those stories from a perspective other than my own. It was interesting to hear moments that we hold dear about each other without the other really knowing. It was eye-opening to hear what we learned from each other over the years. We really do not understand the impact we have on other’s lives until we are told. Why don’t we tell each other more?

I left our conversation validated that this, Neighbourhood SHEro, is the right platform to tell each other more…to give thanks, celebrate each other and continue to inspire. Thank you to my first guests, mom and Deiala for taking this leap of faith with me. Thank you for your authenticity and openness. Thank you both for highlighting and embodying the true qualities of a SHEro.
