Fruit on the Frontlines: Mariam Adam

Introducing Mariam Adam, an incredible Frontline SHEro working hard to ensure safe and healthy access to food within our supermarkets in the GTA. I was so honoured to chat with Mariam about how COVID-19 has impacted her day-to-day life and perspectives on SHEroism. Our conversation highlighted the honour and pride that underpins how she shows up at work everyday. Despite the fear and uncertainty that is plaguing our world and communities right now, essential workers, like Mariam are embodying true strength and SHEroism! Thank you Mariam for all that you do!

Tell me about yourself. What do you want people to know about you?

Well…my name is Mariam Adam. I am married woman with two beautiful children. I work at Fortinos in the GTA. I am a Manager at the salad bar where I prepare fruit and vegetable trays for customers. I have been working at the Fortinos since 1998. Actually my 22-year anniversary is coming up on Mother’s Day. It’s going to look very different this Mother’s Day

Who are your SHEroes?

I am constantly inspired by the people around me. My daughter is a SHEro. The people I work with are truly SHEroes and heroes. There are so many of them that are working and helping the customers, every single day. Some of my colleagues are cleaning shopping carts and baskets on a regular basis. Honestly, we’re all doing a great job. I also have so many female staff that are such hard workers. On top of working so hard in their homes, they come to in and do really amazing work. They are really strong, and they are SHEroes…I like this term a lot. I will start using it.

Have you ever felt like a SHEro?

To be honest, no. I have never used that word to describe me. I feel like in my life, I am just doing my job and my duties – working at the supermarket, being a mother and wife. It’s all part of my normal life.

Has that changed during COVID-19?

Surprisingly, yes, and so quickly. Customers seem to really appreciate what we are doing. Some of my customers are coming up to us…my team, not only me…to thank us. They really express how that they are grateful for what we are doing. They mention that almost every day.  They are going out of their way to thank us now which is really nice. I think they understand that we are really trying to help!

How do you feel about being an Essential Worker (aka Frontline SHEro)?

You know what, honestly, I feel a little a bit nervous. I am trying to protect myself and protect my customers. When I see so many people with masks, it makes me nervous. Even hearing the news is really scary… but someone has to work. Somebody has to help the customers, no?

I am happy to go into work. I am really happy to help people, honestly. When I can help my customers, I feel proud… especially seniors. It gives me joy and happiness to help them.

It has been really busy. This week, I worked six days in a row because some of my team is afraid to come into work. Some of the employees have small kids or elderly parents and don’t want to take risks. So, I have been covering additional shifts, but I am happy to do it.

When I reflect, it has been tough. I still cannot believe what is going on. At first, I thought this was a joke. The first time I saw a customer with a mask, it was unusual, terrifying. Now, it is normal. All customers have masks on, and it is a little scary for us working. I feel happy to help but it is still scary at the same time.

What is it like to being a Manager during this challenging time?

As a manager, I really have to lead my team so I think about them and their safety. During this time, we are trying to stay positive. We try to make light of the situation. We make a joke and laugh together to get through the day. I want them to feel safe and appreciated for what they do.

My organization has been really celebrating their workers. Head office has sent out thank-you letters and communications to all staff. Leadership from head office has made an effort to come into stores and thank us for all our hard work. I hope other organizations are doing that for their essential workers.

What do you think is the new normal for grocery stores?

It is interesting to think about the new normal. I honestly don’t know. I think there will be many changes. We might have more delivery models. They might reduce hours for those of us working in stores when they create better solutions. It is hard to predict what will happen to us essential workers after COVID-19.

Do you think this crisis will change the way society defines SHEroism?

Hearing some of the comments from customers, recently, I think so. Some customers have said to me “Your job is so important and amazing. You are doing such a great job. Thank you!” It has been really nice to see. Before all of this, all we heard was complaining, seriously. So maybe after all of this, people will have a greater sense of appreciation for everyone supporting all aspects of their daily lives.

Do you have any parting words?

Honestly, I am so honoured to even be interviewed. You don’t really see what you’re doing as being heroic or SHEroic. I used to take care of my mom full time, my kids, back to work and I never stopped to think twice about being a SHEro and I appreciate being recognized. We have to support reach other and this platform is really impactful.

Someone has to work. Someone has to help our customers. I am happy to do it.
